Walker Library

Extract from The Evening Chronicle
October 7th. 1908

"The new Free Library presented by
Sir William Haswell Stephenson to
Newcastle for the use of Walker
residents, and to be known as the
'Lady Stephenson' Library.
Sir William presented the Elswick
and Heaton Libraries to the City.
The opening ceremony will be
performed by Mr. Walter Runciman,
M.P., president of the Board of Education this morning."

Sir William Haswell Stephenson was
Mayor of Newcastle in 1875 1884
1894 and 1902
He was Lord Mayor in 1909 1910 and
1911.
The library was named after his wife
who died in 1901.
